In-N-Out on Oakport Street: A Crime Epicenter in a City Grappling with Surging Violence

Juliana Velazquez, an employee at the In-N-Out Burger on Oakport Street in East Oakland, found herself in a distressing situation when thieves targeted her car while she was on duty. The bustling fast-food joint, nestled in one of East Oakland's most perilous strip malls, has become a hotspot for criminal activities, amplifying the challenges faced by the community.

Velazquez recounted the incident, stating, "They broke the windows on both passenger sides." As she stood outside the burger joint in her white uniform, her gaze fixated on the parking lot where the break-in had occurred the previous year. While she observed, a gray Toyota SUV pulled into a parking spot scattered with shattered glass, indicating yet another victim of auto crime.

Situated on 8300 Oakport St., the In-N-Out has unwittingly become the epicenter of crime in a city already grappling with a surge in violence and theft. Police records since 2019 reveal a staggering 1,335 incidents in the vicinity of the diner, surpassing all other locations in Oakland. The reported incidents encompass nine robberies, two commercial burglaries, four domestic violence cases, and a staggering 1,174 car break-ins, according to data from the Oakland police.

The In-N-Out, known for being a convenient stop for travelers heading to Oakland International Airport and a lively spot after A's games at the Coliseum, now finds itself in the midst of chaotic scenes. Sean Crawford, a worker in a nearby building, attested to the unsettling atmosphere, recounting instances of robbery crews breaking into work vans and In-N-Out customers boldly confronting burglars.

The pervasive criminal activity around this fast-food establishment not only underscores the broader challenges faced by the community but also raises concerns about the safety and security of both patrons and employees. As East Oakland contends with this surge in criminal incidents, there is a pressing need for effective measures to ensure the well-being of those living and working in the area.
